Charter a bare boat or skippered Yacht?

How do you charter a bare boat or what is the procedure to find a skippered yacht? What kind of license is needed to cruise without a skipper on a yacht you have rented? Is skippered boat expensive then bare boat? How do you find a good skipper? This are all the questions that I would like to answer in this post.

Whenever you charter a boat it is advisable to mentioned at the beginning procedure if you would like to charter a boat with skipper or just a yacht without any crew. The procedure is not that different but charter company would try to find you a better skipper in a shorter time. You can take also a yacht with other crew then just skipper. If the yacht needs more people to control and there are also hostess and cook that will make you delicious meals.

When you are considering to rent a boat without a crew you need to check if you have license that will cover of controlling with the length of the vessel. Usually basics permission for controlling boats covers all boats until 25 meters or less then 90 feet. There is also different restrictions for more powerful boats. If you are unsure if your permission covers it ask charter company at the begging of the charter procedure.

Skippered boat is a bit expensive then bare boat. However this cost is not that big if you considered in percentage of the rent of the yacht or sailboat. Depending of the experience of the skipper, skipper cost from 100€ to 150€ per day. You need to cover also his meals for all the time that he will be on the boat. Same goes for the other crew. And if you hire bigger and more luxurious yacht, price for the staff will go even higher.

Charter companies usually have their own skippers that will recommended to you. This skippers usually drives same yacht for the whole season. If you have any special request regarding skipper please ask charter company. Request such as language spoken by skipper and various communication skills are acceptable and executable if possible.
